“I need to talk to my partner first”

Authority12 of 91 in the library

“I'd have to run it by my wife first.”

What they actually mean

This one is genuinely ambiguous, which is what makes it effective. Some buyers really do decide jointly. Others reach for an absent third party because it is the one objection you cannot argue with.

The cost of guessing wrong is high in both directions. Treat a real joint decision as a dodge and you are rude to someone who was being honest. Treat a dodge as real and you have lost the deal to a conversation you will never be in.

The move: Qualify authority early

The best handling of this objection happens twenty minutes before it is raised. Ask early and neutrally how decisions like this usually get made — nobody is defensive about process before there is anything to defend.

If it surfaces late anyway, find out whether the partner is a decision-maker or a sounding board: if they said do whatever you think, where would you land? The answer tells you whether you have an authority problem or a conviction problem wearing a disguise.

If it is real, get into the room. Offer to be on the call that answers their questions rather than sending your pitch secondhand through someone who was not sold on it either.

How it sounds

Prospect

“I'd want to run it past my wife before I commit to anything.”

You

“Makes sense. If she said “do whatever you think” — where would you land?”

Why it works. It separates the two objections without calling anyone a liar. If they say they'd move ahead, the partner is a formality and you can help them prepare that conversation. If they hesitate, the real objection is theirs, and now you can hear it.

What loses the deal

Don’t say

“Sure — talk it over and let me know what you both decide.”

You have handed your pitch to someone who never heard it, to be delivered by someone who is not yet convinced, into a conversation that happens after dinner. You will lose that one.

Reading it is not running it. Closer drills you on authority against an AI prospect that holds its position and only opens when you earn it — then a coach walks the transcript back and shows you where the call turned.
